Tavern Tips

IBU - INTERNATIONAL BITTERNESS UNIT

IBU is an abbreviation for “International Bitterness Unit”. This is a measure of the relative amount and strength of the hops used in the brewing process of a given beer, and is a fair indicator of the expected bitterness (though other bold ingredients - like fruit, herbs, or caramel - can contribute heavily to the overall flavor as well).

This scale ranges from 1 ~ 120, with a lower end of classic lagers, wheat beers, and blondes (~5 - 20 IBU), a healthy midsection of ambers, pilsners, porters, and pale ales (~20 - 70 IBU), and a higher end of IPAs and Imperials (70+ IBU).

ABV - ALCOHOL BY VOLUME

ABV is an abbreviation for “Alcohol By Volume”. This is a measure of the relative amount of alcohol included in a given drink. While there is generally less variety in this metric, with a majority of lagers, ciders, and even pale ales sticking around 4 - 6% ABV, craft beers can reach levels of up to 10 - 12% ABV, offering both a depth of flavor and a loss of depth perception.
